Senate ChambersMike was elected to the Colorado Senate in November 2006 after winning a spirited battle for the party nomination against a sitting state senator. He went on to win a three-way primary contest, and then a pitched battle for the general election in a devastating year for Republican candidates.

Near the end of his first year in office, Mike was elected to leadership by his Republican colleagues in the senate as they named him caucus chairman. He was re-elected to caucus leadership in 2008. In 2010 he was elected as Minority Leader.

Mike and his late wife, Kimberly, were married 17 years. Their children are Meghan, Ethan, Allie-Grace, and Soren. The Kopp family lives in the Ken Caryl Ranch. Mike’s a fan of Colonial American history, endurance sports, fly fishing, hunting, home remodeling projects and a bit of rock climbing.
